I saw a highly compelling tv segment recently about the number of students skipping meals or relying on the Cal food bank because they couldn't afford to eat, for instance. There are many worthy causes amongst the Cal student population. In this case, they are protesting because the spaces they have been offered on campus do not match a set of rigorous criteria that most Cal student organizations couldn't even dream of having. In the historical case, students demonstrated for their first amendment rights of assembly and speech. Today, Sproul Plaza is overrun with brochures, student groups, and other groups representing every interest under the sun. Talking about civil rights or passing out brochures about civil rights could get you arrested.

Fifty years ago, students protested because free speech was being obstructed in a way totally foreign to today's Berkeley students.
